Infection

Hep B Surface Antibody (anti-HBs) Learn More

Hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs): The presence of anti-HBs is generally interpreted as indicating recovery and immunity from hepatitis B virus infection. Anti-HBs also develops in a person who has been successfully vaccinated against hepatitis B. anti-HBs or HBsAb (Hepatitis B surface antibody) - A "positive" or "reactive" anti-HBs (or HBsAb) test result indicates that a person is protected against the hepatitis B virus. This protection can be the result of receiving the hepatitis B vaccine or successfully recovering from a past hepatitis B infection.

Immunity

Hep B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) Learn More

HBsAg assays are routinely used to diagnose suspected HBV infection and monitor the status of infected individuals to determine whether the infection has resolved or the patient has become a chronic carrier of the virus. HBsAg (Hepatitis B surface antigen) - A "positive" or "reactive" HBsAg test result means that the person is infected with hepatitis B. This test can detect the actual presence of the hepatitis B virus (called the "surface antigen") in your blood.

Hep C Antibody Learn More

The HCV antibody test, sometimes called the anti-HCV test, looks for antibodies to the hepatitis C virus in blood. Antibodies are chemicals released into the bloodstream when someone gets infected. Test results can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to come back. A reactive or positive antibody test means you have been infected with the hepatitis C virus at some point in time. Once people have been infected, they will always have antibodies in their blood. This is true if they have cleared the virus, have been cured, or still have the virus in their blood.

HIV

HIV 1, 2 & p24 antigen Learn More

It detects the HIV antigen called p24 plus antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2. (HIV-1 is the most common type found in the United States, while HIV-2 has a higher prevalence in parts of Africa.) The level of p24 antigen and the amount of virus (viral load) increase significantly soon after initial infection. Testing for p24 allows for detection of early infections, before HIV antibody is produced. A few weeks after exposure, antibodies to HIV are produced in response to the infection and remain detectable in the blood thereafter, making the antibody test useful for detecting infections weeks after exposure.

About this test and how it can help you

The antibody or serology test is done to ascertain a previous viral infection and the body's immune response towards it. It screens antibodies, which are proteins in the blood produced by the immune system that combat infections such as viruses. Antibody testing may help avoid future occurrences of the same infection. Antibodies are microorganism specific. For example, antibodies produced against the chickenpox virus may help to avoid a recurrence, but it will not protect from another viral infection such as influenza.

Antibody testing is extremely promising as it will help us to understand a selected virus' widespread nature in our communities. The antibody tests determine whether or not a patient has been exposed to or can build up antibodies against it. Then it provides a transparent understanding of how widespread the virus is and tests the number of antibody types within the blood. These tests may identify those with immunity to the virus. Apposite antibody testing can enable health workers, first responders and our community to get back to work safely.
