The surface of hepatitis B virus is coated in small proteins known as antigens. This test measures the level of hepatitis B surface antigens (HBsAg) present within the blood. If the test is positive for HBsAg it can that the individual is infected with the hepatitis B virus. In patients that have already been diagnosed with hepatitis B, it can also be used to monitor whether the infection is in an active or chronic stage. During an active infection there is a greater risk of spreading the virus and infecting others.

About this test

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) targets the immune cells of your body. This can make it more difficult for you to fight infections, as your immune system slowly weakens. HIV is typically passed on from an individual that is infected with the virus to others through unprotected sex. However, exposure may also occur when sharing used and contaminated needles as HIV can be transmitted through blood to blood contact. Further to this, the virus may be unknowingly transmitted to a child through the mothers’ breast milk. This outlines just a few of the reasons why early detection of HIV is integral in reducing the risk of unknowingly passing the virus onto others.

Hepatitis B and C infections are caused by the hepatitis B and C viruses respectively. These viruses target and attack the liver leading to damage which can result in scarring that can place you at a greater risk of developing potentially life-threatening liver failure or liver cancer. Hepatitis B has a similar mode of transmission to HIV and can be transmitted through unprotected sex and contaminated needles.

Hepatitis C may also be passed on through unprotected sex, though is more likely to be transmitted through direct blood to blood contact, such as through the sharing of contaminated needles.

This test is perfect if:

  • You are concerned you have been exposed to the HIV, hepatitis B or C virus
  • You have had intimate contact with an individual either suspected to have or positive for HIV, hepatitis B or C
  • You are in search for an early diagnosis which can help reduce the risks of transmitting the HIV virus to other individuals and get you started on treatment sooner

We take the upmost care in ensuring we deliver reliable and accurate results. Therefore, to ensure this, if a blood sample is found to be positive for HIV, hepatitis B or C, the patient should purchase a second blood test to confirm the overall result
